Consultancy reviews—see what our clients have to say about us!

We have had the pleasure of working with KGL Consulting many times over the last ten years. We consider them a trusted go-to partner in developing and improving our journals program. The services that KGL has provided us are extensive – they range from reader-author-member surveys and bibliometric analyses for each of our journals to maximize submissions and citations; to assessments of our editorial and production staffing structure; to guidance for recruiting, assessing, and remunerating Editors-in-Chief; to launching an Open Access journal and other new products; to developing RFPs and analyzing bids from vendors to improve our institutional sales worldwide; to a comprehensive three-year project that produced a new strategic plan for our entire publications portfolio’s scientific and financial performance. In all cases, KGL staff worked efficiently and seamlessly with staff and Society leadership – including making presentations to our Board and committees — to meet the project objectives.

They have functioned as an extension of our department and are a delight to work with.

Our portfolio has more than 20 active titles, and KGL Consulting has helped us with sophisticated financial modeling to enhance the sustainability of our publishing program, while also serving our other core values of quality, breadth, and accessibility. Editor-in-Chief Recruitment

KGL Consulting was hired to help recruit a new Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of the American Planning Association. We needed a workable and replicable process based on best practices that would engage our Search Committee and key stakeholders on a short timeline. Lisa Marshall, the Senior Consulting Associate who handled our project, proposed a strategy, conducted stakeholder interviews and prepared documentation outlining the qualities we needed in a new editor. Once our Call for Nominations was published, the KGL team followed through quickly and thoroughly on every lead; our candidate pool was strong, and we had no shortage of finalists for the position. We are in the process of negotiating a contract with our new editor now, and are extremely pleased with the professionalism of the search and its outcome.  Throughout, KGL provided insight on a variety of related topics including transition of our editorial office, compensation, and benchmarking data. I would work with this agency again in a heartbeat!

Harriet M. Bogdanowicz, MBA, CAE
CHIEF COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER, AMERICAN PLANNING ASSOCIATION

It was a pleasure working with KGL to search for our Director of Publications at INFORMS. I was consistently impressed with KGL’s knowledge of the business and all the players in the field. KGL finds quality candidates and shares detailed summaries on each competent applicant they recommend for your role.

I appreciated KGL’s honesty and input. They truly understood what was needed in the director role and were dedicated to finding the best fit. It was not just the process of getting a boxed checked for a hire, it was making sure I had the right person that would be happy and dynamic at INFORMS. KGL are true professionals in their field, and I give them my highest recommendations for your talent searches.

We recently worked with KGL Consulting to hire a journal editor for our flagship journal, Neurosurgery. As we began this process, KGL performed a thorough and insightful analysis of our needs and provided a detailed timeline of the recruiting milestones that would be achieved, so we knew exactly what to expect and when it would happen. KGL kept us informed with prompt communication throughout the entire process and the end result was a high quality candidate who is a great fit with our organization.

After much difficulty finding director of publishing candidates that were both technically proficient and a good match, the American Water Works Association contracted with KGL Consulting. Within six weeks, KGL submitted candidates, a finalist was chosen, and an offer was made. The appeal of using KGL is their knowledge of technical publishing, editorial development, production, and periodicals. This knowledge resulted in better candidates and a timelier introduction of our new director of publishing.

DEPUTY CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Our Journal Board of Trustees invited KGL Consulting to manage the search for a qualified replacement of the Managing Editor of the Arthroscopy Association of North America’s Arthroscopy Journal who was retiring in June 2015. Due to KGL’s vast consulting experience with scholarly journals, we also trusted their knowledge to assist us in redefining and fine-tuning the Managing Editor job description. KGL attracted an excellent group of qualified candidates and detailed summaries of each were presented to us for review and consideration. KGL also helped to prepare interview questions, managed many of the logistics for a cross-country interview location, completed in-depth reference checks providing summaries of each, and managed the negotiation of a final job offer. Our new Managing Editor has been terrific and we are enormously grateful.

Publisher RFPs and Contract Negotiations

As a society with a decades-long history of self-publishing our journals, the decision to seek a contract publishing partnership was one that required much careful thought and consideration. KGL Consulting expertly guided ASN through the RFP process every step of the way, from selecting the right publishers to engage, based on KGL Consulting’s extensive knowledge and connections throughout the industry, to eventually negotiating an agreement with a partner who fulfills both our needs and our mission. Lisa and the KGL team took the time to understand our current operations, and ensured our future publisher could meet and exceed our expectations. They offered a detailed but easy-to-grasp financial analysis that not only compared publisher offers, but also illustrated how our self-publishing financial return could be improved across our varied portfolio of journals. Most importantly, KGL Consulting’s broad experience and practical insights lent us comfort throughout a process that could otherwise have been very stressful!

The IGCS has been engaged with KGL Consulting for over 18 months addressing key components of our journal publishing operations. KGL Consulting began its work by conducting a detailed audit of the journal that culminated with a thorough report that helped our leadership make crucial decisions to undertake some fundamental changes. KGL managed an RFP process for a new publisher which has led to a more equitable relationship, provided feedback regarding the role of a managing editor, facilitated the search for a new Editor-in-Chief, and negotiated the corresponding contracts. They have been an important resource for the new Editor and provide him with valuable guidance as he becomes familiar with his role. The KGL team is professional, courteous, and extremely knowledgeable about non-profit society publishing and peer-reviewed journals. This is the second time I have worked with KGL Consulting and both times have had equally amazing results.

Mary Eiken
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
INTERNATIONAL GYNECOLOGIC CANCER SOCIETY

We hired KGL Consulting through a highly competitive RFP process and were pleased to engage this excellent partner who helped us navigate through the mire of issues related to the potential renewal of our publishing partner contract, the analysis of self-publishing options, and development of an RFP for a new publisher if needed. It was a pleasure to work with a professional who quickly earned the confidence of our physician and staff leaders. Cara quickly learned our culture and helped us think strategically about our ultimate publishing goals. She guided us to an end result that was far better than we had anticipated. I would highly recommend this seasoned publishing consulting group and plan on utilizing their services again as we continue to expand our publishing products.

ASRM engaged the services of KGL Consulting to assist with securing a new contract for publication of its world renowned scientific journal, Fertility and Sterility. KGL diligently worked with us from identification of qualified publishers, through the RFP and selection process. They quickly established knowledge of our organization and business practices, and developed a partnership with us to carry out this important project. We relied on their expertise and advice to guide us through the process and to assist with negotiation of the final contract. The associate assigned to lead our project was clearly an expert in the field and was always readily available and accessible to us. Their input was invaluable in narrowing the choices down to experienced publishers that were also a good fit for ASRM. We were very pleased with the successful outcome of the project, and consider KGL to be a trusted business partner.

On behalf of the American Physical Therapy Association, I would like to formally thank you and your KGL colleagues for the wonderful services recently provided. It was not only the expertise but also your patience and ability to understand and respect our culture throughout the process that was very much appreciated. Considering whether to co-publish our flagship scientific publication was a huge decision for our Board of Directors to make. The journal is viewed by many of the association’s members as their most-prized membership benefit, so it was not just the final decision itself that was under scrutiny, but also the process itself. From the audit through the RFP and application process your guidance and counsel was invaluable. Once the decision was made to co-publish, your ability to help negotiate the new contract was critical. We believe our journal is primed to evolve and help lead our profession into the future. Again, thank you for the expertise and guidance throughout this process!

William Boissonnault
(Former) EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
AMERICAN PHYSICAL THERAPY ASSOCIATION

The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) first retained Cara Rivera for counsel on a contract extension with a commercial publisher that was publishing an APhA journal. The result was a far better deal that benefited APhA for 10 years. Nine years later, we went back to Cara to draft an RFP to solicit proposals from commercial publishers to publish that same journal and two additional journals we had been self-publishing. Cara counseled us on selection of the winning publisher and on contract terms. Once again the results have been exceptionally positive. APhA’s management remains impressed with Cara’s knowledge of the scholarly publishing field, the respect that she commands of the major publishers, her strength, her fairness, and her patience. We would certainly go back again to KGL Consulting in the future.
