Maintaining Relevance: Strategies to Drive User Engagement with Journal Articles

Tuesday, May 2, 2023, 9:45–10:45 AM

Moderators:
Laura Lander, Editorial Director, KnowledgeWorks Global Ltd.
Kelly Lenox, Associate News Editor, Environmental Health Perspectives, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences

Speakers:
Ginny Herbert, Editorial Developmental Manager, Frontiers
Cathi Siegel, Digital Publications Analyst, American Physiological Society
Christine Nelson, Director of Publishing and Editorial Operations, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery
Chirag “Jay” Patel, Head of Sales (Americas), Cactus Global

Promoting engagement with journal content is essential to maintaining relevance in today’s competitive STEM environment. How to engage younger generations of researchers is challenging the status quo. Article discovery by researchers has changed and grown, as have user expectations.

Publishers are rising to meet the demands of this new ecosystem. “Enhanced publication content” includes content that can be reused in social media outlets, as well as to attract readers at the peripheries of scientific disciplines and beyond—whether experts in related fields or nonscientists seeking specific information. Such content—including visual abstracts and infographics, video, podcasts, and plain language summaries—can be created at the journal level or the organizational level. This session will focus on how journals, societies, and publishers handle this material to promote engagement with researchers and audiences far beyond the original article’s readership.

KGL’s Alexandra Kahler will also be participating in a Short Course:

Short Course on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility

Sunday, April 30, 2023, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

The Short Course on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility is designed for journals and their editorial staff to address the importance of keeping DEIA in the forefront of all processes and activities. Presentations will be given on topics including fair and representative review processes and policies, race and ethnicity reporting guidelines, inclusive language, collecting demographic data to guide your DEIA initiatives, the editor-in-chief’s role in leading DEIA initiatives, and putting DEIA policies into place for journals, publishers, and societies. Faculty will bring real-life experience and share what has worked for them. Participants will also have the opportunity to put forward their questions and problems for consideration by the faculty and other participants. Active participation and exchange of ideas are encouraged.
